The incident occurred shortly before noon on Thursday, Aug. 8.

Both lanes of travel on William Penn Highway were closed as a result of the leak between Stones Crossing Road and Sheridan Drive, police said.

The evacuation covered an area of more than 100 yards, they said.

Emergency services and utility company crews were at the scene.
